The Hip-Hop Professional™ would like you to meet Chelsey Miller (Hampton University):
Q: What’s your major/area of interest and what school do you attend?
A: I am a broadcast journalism major and marketing minor at Hampton University.
Q: What are some of your current projects or activities that you are engaged in on campus? Also, have you completed any beneficial internships/summer programs?
A: Since my freshman year at HU, I have been a member of the Student Executive Council, coordinating and planning campus wide events. I am a member of The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ). I am also the assistant producer of the entertainment segment of HU’s student-run broadcasting station, WHOV.
You can also find me hosting campus-wide events such as Hampton’s most recent homecoming fashion show.
This spring I interned at WHRO, a PBS affiliated broadcasting station. While at WHRO I served as the social media and web content intern. Last summer I interned at Magic Johnson’s network, Aspire TV in Atlanta, GA. While interning at Aspire I worked alongside the marketing department. I created social media campaigns and barter proposals. The most exciting thing I did was assist in the organization of a fireside chat with the HBCU All-Stars and Billion Dollar Roundtable representatives. My senior year in high school, I also interned for a local news station in Maryland, WMDT Channel 47 News. As a newsroom intern I researched stories, updated the stations webpage, and created a demo-reel of my very own stand-ups.
Q: What has been the hardest thing about being a college student and how do you tackle your challenges?
A: The hardest part about being a college student has been staying true to myself while juggling a busy schedule and focusing on my long-term goals.
I really push myself academically. It is easy to get distracted and lose sight of yourself and what you want to accomplish. I know I am working towards being able to do what I love so it is important to keep my eye on the prize at all times. I am also very fortunate to have a great support system (my parents) and my strong faith in God to turn to when times get a little tough.
Q:What are your top social media platforms that you use and why? Is there a new social app that has recently launched that u love?
A: Being that I’m so interested in marketing, I’ve grown to love and appreciate social media. My top five go-to social media sites are Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, WordPress, and Facebook. After all who appreciated the value of 140 characters before Twitter. I like Instagram because it is a fun and easy way to capture special moments. I use Facebook to stay connected with family and friends and different groups/ organizations I am involved in. LinkedIn is another site I use. As a college student it is an easy way to network and form relationships with business professionals and be informed of business opportunities. Lastly I’m obsessed with blogging and reading others work, so WordPress is a necessity.
Q: What are your strategic goals for the next 5 years?
A: In 5 years, I hope to have established a solid foundation for a successful career in the media industry. I will be finishing a semester early this fall, and plan to spend the spring semester abroad in the UK, either studying or interning in my field. I also plan to pursue an advanced degree in Business, because eventually I would like to run or manage a television network or media outlet of some kind. Ultimately I see myself using my platform to share the stories of people all over the world.
