ATLANTA (CBS46) –

Vocal group Outkast performed for a sold-out crowd Saturday at Centennial Park in Atlanta.

“They’re just a classic group. You can’t do any better than Outkast in the South,” said Thornton Brown, a fan.

The group sold out three concerts over the weekend.

“I toured with them all across the country, doing all of these small ‘hole in the wall’ clubs when people weren’t all that willing to accept Southern hip-hop,” said Shanti Das, a former music industry executive.

Das said the group, which started in 1982 in East Point, put Atlanta on the map.

“Prior to Outkast coming out, we didn’t really have any artists shouting and chanting, ‘Atlanta,’ and wearing Braves caps and Falcons paraphernalia,” said Das.

Das said the world did not immediately embrace Southern rap.

“We were trying to find our place, being these Southern hip-hop artists from Atlanta,” said Das.

“When Dre got up there on that stage and uttered those infamous words, ‘The South’s got something to say,’ it put us on the map forever,” said Das.

Das said the group is once again a trail-blazer, performing at festival-type venues.

“And the one thing I’ll say about Outkast, they instill so much pride in this town and in this city,” said Das.
