The Hip-Hop Professional would like you to meet Wesley Eggleston (Hampton University)

Q: What’s your major/area of interest and what school do you attend?

A: My major is broadcast journalism, with an area of emphasis or “minor” in business. My area of interest is in sports journalism. I attend Hampton University.

Q: What are some of your current projects or activities that you are engaged in on campus? Also, have you completed any beneficial internships/summer programs?

A: Well I consider myself a student first, so my main job is to continue to do well in school. Outside of my classes however I am a staff writer for the Hampton Script Newspaper in the sports section. I do pre and post game stories, and profiles of Hampton students. I am also able to cover major stories in the professional sports world. I have done write-ups on NBA free agency that occurred over this past summer, as well as NFL top off-season moves.

I have not had any opportunities to work for a professional organization in the field of journalism. However I have had several jobs since I was a sophomore in high school. I was a summer camp aid, and a college mentor to high school students when I was at my previous college Holy Names University. And I have been an on-call playground aid for an elementary school in California since 2011 to the present. The school always welcomes me back because of my work ethic, and commitment to working there.

Q: How hard is it being a student and balancing the work you do towards your career goal?

A: I find it extremely difficult to balance being a student, and balancing my career goals. Not because it is too much work, but because I want my end result of being a professional sports journalist so bad. I do understand, and respect the process however. And completing the process is one of my biggest drives in life currently outside of graduating from Hampton University. The day I accomplish my goal of becoming a beat writer for a professional team though, is when I will truly be happy and feel that all my hard work up to this point has paid off. Knowing God has my back in all aspects of my life, keeping me grounded, humbled, and blessed with gifts no one else has unique like my own is why I am able to balance it all.

Q: What are your top social media platforms that you use and why? Is there a new social app that has recently launched that u love?

A: My top social media platform is Twitter. I love Twitter because I can connect with journalists and reporters who post information about my favorite sports section. I can get updates on injuries, how practice went, etc. when connecting with those who are affiliated with that information.

Q: What are your goals for the next 3 to 5 years?

A: My goal for myself within the next three to five years is to become a writer for a major sports organization. I would love to be a beat writer for the San Antonio Spurs, or the St. Louis Rams… I’d say would be my top choices. I’d also be interested in becoming a writer for ESPN, or Bleacher Report. Whatever organization I was a part of though, as long as I am doing one of my favorite things to do (writing), and talking and being able to cover one of my other passions (sports) I would consider my life to be blessed. I would definitely have to thank God for that opportunity everyday of the rest of my life.
