The Hip-Hop Professional wants you to meet Melanie Schlenker (Northern Illinois University):

Q: What’s your major/area of interest and what school do you attend?
A: My major is Organizational/Corporate Communications and I attend Northern Illinois University.

Q: What are some of your current projects or activities that you are engaged in on campus? Also, have you completed any beneficial internships/summer programs?
A: I am currently Secretary of the Communications Student Organization Council (COMM-SAC). This organization is the voice of the Communications undergraduate department. I attend several types of meetings with department chairs and faculty members. I am part of the publicity committee which is based around promoting our department through social media. My committee created a new bulletin board to represent our major that will get students exited about being in Communications. Another role I have as a member of this council is to find a speaker to come to our school that we can represent. I am now in the process of booking Shanti Das to come speak at my school which is my main focus and I feel very blessed to have access to this opportunity. Lastly, I will be a teaching assistant (TA) for one of my favorite classes, Communication Research Studies, in the Spring of 2015.

Q: How hard is it being a student and balancing the work you do towards your career goal?
A: I am finding that the balance between being a student and working towards my career goals go hand in hand. Being passionate about school and hard work has opened up so many opportunities for me. I don’t see school as a chore, I see it as an everyday possibility of learning and growing. Teacher’s have always meant a lot to me since I was a little. I always find motivation through my mentors which helps me get closer to my goals.
Q:What are your top social media platforms that you use and why?
A: My top social media platforms are Facebook and Instagram. I have been using Facebook for quite a few years now but my favorite social media outlet is Instagram. I find that it is a great way to show support to people you love and follow. I think it is also very useful for promoting and is an app that people are very likely to go on numerous times a day.
Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
A: In 5 years, I see myself as a working girl in a big city! I will stay true to myself whatever path I take and make an ever growing, beautiful network of people, family, and friends along the way!
Melanie, we salute you, keep up the good work!!
