The Hip-Hop Professional wants you to meet Cassidy Sparks (Howard University)
Q: What’s your major/area of interest and what school do you attend?
A: My major area of interest is broadcast journalism and I am a rising sophomore at Howard University
Q: What are some of your current projects or activities that you are engaged in on campus? Also, have you completed any beneficial internships/summer programs?
A: Thus far I have not done any major projects related to broadcast; however, I have completed a few pieces through my coursework. I have an e-portfolio, which features my YouTube channel from high school, my WordPress blog, and my news feature story. I am an honors student in the Howard University Annenberg Honors Program for Communications. My freshman year I sat back and took everything in, I wasn’t as involved as I wanted to be. I was of course an honors student, which took up the majority of my time with my coursework, but I joined the Georgia club, and I helped campaign for our undergraduate trustee, I also completed twenty hours of community service per semester as a requirement for our honors program. One of my favorite services was being a DC CAPCS Butler Reading Partner. This is a program that partners up a person as a tutor and a child and through a develop curriculum, helps to bring the child to their accurate reading level. I would go every Wednesday for an hour, this program really helped me to feel grounded. I have completed one beneficial summer internship. Last year I had the amazing opportunity to serve as an intern in the office of Atlanta’s Mayor Kasim Reed. Through this opportunity I met a number of powerful people and gained a world of knowledge.
Q: How hard is it being a student and balancing the work you do towards your career goal?
A: Freshman year was a difficult adjustment for me, being so far away from my family. The challenge thus far was not so much balancing being a student and the work to be done towards a career goal. I feel that my coursework as a student is my work towards my career goal. This may just have been my experience freshman year due to the fact that I didn’t really do any outside work toward my future career. Next year, I plan to volunteer at WHUT our television station at Howard, this will help me in gaining more skills and knowledge for my career goal.
Q:What are your top social media platforms that you use and why?
A: I have array of social media platforms that I use with various uses. My favorite social media platform is Instagram, because I love being able to share what I am doing through pictures and videos. Another reason why I love Instagram, is because I have a pretty large following of 2,681. Another social media platform that I use is Twitter, I used to have a personal twitter, but now I just use it for educational purposes. I don’t have that many followers, but I mainly use it as a source to gather news from different stations and networks. Aside from Instagram my second favorite platform is Tumblr. I love to use Tumblr, it allows me to explore my artsy creative side and I can also post very real moving things if need be. One of the more structured platforms that I use is Google+. I have found that I can use this platform for a number of things. Now that Google and YouTube are together Google + allows me to be innovative with my YouTube channel as well as create things like an e-portfolio or a Google doc.
Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
A: In 5 years I see myself as just graduated Magna or Suma Cum laude, possibly looking toward a graduate journalism program at Columbia, University of Pennsylvania, or Northwestern. If not a graduate program I hope to be able to get a job in the field. A dream for me would be to have a position here in Atlanta based CNN as a reported or anchor. If not CNN possibly Channel 2 (an ABC affiliate) If I chose a different path of broadcast such as entertainment, I would like to start somewhere like BET and follow in the footsteps of Rocsi Diaz to work for Entertainment Tonight.
