The Hip-Hop Professional wants you to meet Alexandra Mayo (Syracuse University)
Q: What’s your major/area of interest and what school do you attend?
A: I am currently a junior in the Bandier Program for the Music and Entertainment Industries at Syracuse University. I am also part of the Renee Crown Honors Program and am pursuing a Spanish minor.
Q: What are some of your current projects or activities that you are engaged in on campus? Also, have you completed any beneficial internships/summer programs?
A: This year on campus I have gotten involved with a lot more than I ever have. I co-host an R&B radio show on our college radio station WERW to promote an underrepresented music genre on campus. I’m also working on a project creating a music database composed of student artists for the use of everyone on the university called MusiCuse. Finally, I am working on my Capstone Project for the honors program and have decided to pursue a self-made LP to promote myself as a singer/songwriter.
Last summer I interned with Legacy Talent and Entertainment in Charlotte, NC. I acted mostly as a booking intern and found that it’s not exactly what I want to do with my life. I definitely had a lot of fun exploring this field with the ladies in the office though, and I’m excited to try something else next summer.
Q: How hard is it being a student and balancing the work you do towards your career goal?
A: Being a student in the honors program definitely makes my work load a little more difficult because I have an additional project most students don’t, but I’m excited to start working on it because it allows me to fully immerse myself in my field. My mom is in education, so my entire life I have been taught the value of education and that I need to put my studies first. I’m here to study music, something I love, so being a student and working towards my career goals are the same thing.
Q:What are your top social media platforms that you use and why?
A: My top social media platforms are Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. The uses for social media are endless because you can use it for personal use or professional use. I love Twitter and Instagram because they allow you to share a snippet of your life with numerous people at once. I mainly use Facebook to keep up with different groups and organizations around campus. I’ve recently started using it to promote my radio station and have found both Facebook and Twitter to be the most useful. I don’t know much about Tumblr, but I want to start using it as a blog for my radio station.
Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
A: I still don’t exactly know what I want to be doing with my life in the next five years. My ultimate dream is to be performer showcasing all of my own original songs, but within the music industry my interests lie with Publicity/Public Relations. Any path I take is going to be difficult and require hard work, so that’s what I’m focusing on now. I work as hard as I can so when I do find the path that’s right for me, I’ll be ready for it.
